Bye-Bye Crib!

I can't believe how fast our little boy is growing up. He is now sleeping in a toddler bed! He has done amazingly well with the transition. We didn't plan to switch him so early, but we really felt like he was ready. A couple of weeks ago, we thought that he might sleep better if he wasn't in a crib. We realized that he liked sleeping in our bed and thought maybe it was because he had more freedom to move around. We tried to put his crib mattress on the floor for nap time to see how it worked and he did pretty well. I wasn't quite ready to make the transition, so he went back to the crib at night.
The decision to move him out of the crib was made for us on Friday, January 23. For months, I have put him in his pack and play while I get ready. He has toys in there and I let him watch a cartoon on the tv. The pack in play was in our bedroom, so he was only a few feet away from me and I could hear him and watch him. So, that morning, I was in the shower and heard Will say "uh-oh" over and over again. I wasn't too concerned because I thought he had probably dropped (or thrown) one of his toys over the side. He kept repeating it,though, and I realized that it sounded like his voice was getting closer. I peaked out of the shower curtain and Will walked into our bathroom! It seems he climbed out of the pack and play. So, we decided that if he could climb out of the pack and play, it wasn't safe for him to be in his crib. That night, Burt put the toddler bed together.
My parents bought Will a toddler bed a while back and we brought it back with us after Christmas. It is shaped like a car and Will loves it. We left the box spring part of it in Ohio, so for the first couple of days, the mattress was really low and I think that Will still felt too confined in it. Burt got some plywood and was able to fix it and now Will likes to sleep in it. He has actually slept two nights without waking up any! Most nights he wakes up a couple of times and walks into our room. It is still weird to hear his footsteps followed by "Mama." When he wakes up, I take him back to his room to rock back to sleep and put him back in the bed. He has been getting up earlier since he is no longer sleeping part (or most) of the night in our bed, so it makes it easy for him to fall asleep at nap and bed time.
Will's new favorite word is "sure." If you ask him if he wants something he will say "sure" or "yeah, sure." It is so funny. He has also started to really like to play with coins. We let him play with silver dollars or fifty-cent pieces (they are too big for him to swallow). He will carry them around and loves to find little places to hide them. We spend a lot of time looking for his money!
We discovered two new teeth on the top on January 24th. I think that the two on bottom are working there way through now. He is drooling a lot and chewing on his fingers.
Here are some recent pictures. Enjoy!
Will napping on his mattress on the floor. I realize that he wouldn't get hurt if he rolled off. The pillows were there to keep him from rolling off onto the floor and waking himself up!

This is what happens when Will gets up at 5:45 am! He fell asleep eating lunch.

This is a kid after my own heart. After all, I love playing with money, too, and will gladly take any fifty cent pieces or silver dollars offered to me. Similarly, I have always wanted a race car bed--or at least I did when I was little. Finally, today I almost fell asleep at my desk during lunch. Maybe I'm regressing to the toddler stage...

By the way, I love the fact that he was ready for the big-boy bed before you were ready for him to be ready for it. That cracks me up. Good thing you've got another baby on the way to move right into that empty crib. :)

Heidi,
It is too bad that we don't live closer to each other. It sounds like you and Will would be great friends!
It is funny that you made the comment about John moving into the crib. Some nights when I check on Will before I go to bed, I see the side of the crib railing down and panic for a minute, thinking I forgot to put it up. Then I remember that he is sleeping in his toddler bed and I get a little sad at how big my baby is. If I didn't have another one coming in about 7 weeks, I think I would be really sad!

Ha! I do the same thing if I have to get up at 5:45 AM.

Heather, your post brought back so many memories!! We had that same racecar bed (handed down from the Hopkins family) and it had the plywood under the mattress too! And I well remember the pitter patter of little feet slowly bringing me to consciousness in the wee hours of the morning, and waking up to find a tiny pair of eyes right at nose level staring back at me.

Believe it or not, out of all my kids I never had a single one that got into things, so I can remember hearing their footsteps leading somewhere other than my bedroom and thinking, "I don't have to get out of bed unless I hear the sound of breaking glass!" What can I say--I like to play fast and loose!
